The first three things I’ll do when we land in Japan again

Does this ever happen to you? Do you, after you’ve returned home from some great trip ever imagine the things you would do if you had a chance to stay a while longer or to return just for a couple of days?

This happens to me all the time. So it may come as no surprise that I know exactly what will be the first three things I’ll do when we land in Tokyo again. After all, I’ve been envisioning them for the last year and a half.

1. Slurp down a bowl of ramen

It may be the horrible airline food, the jet lag or just my insatiable appetite. Somehow, I’m always starving no matter when or where I land. Luckily, Japan offers the perfect cure for that. And I know exactly where to find it. Tokyo Ramen Street in the basement of the Tokyo Station will be our first stop to indulge in some hearty comfort food. Because no ramen has ever come close to the last one we had right there.

2. Grab a bento box to go

For the past year and a half, I’ve been craving the original Japanese food so much that our second stop will be food related too. Before we board the train to Hiroshima we’re picking up a couple of bento boxes at one of the well-stocked shops in the station. Technically, they are called “ekiben”, meaning “train bento”. So, of course, you cannot take a train ride without one. Let alone a three-and-a-half-hour train ride! I might also grab a matcha latte while there (I know, a very hipster thing to do).

3. Doze off on a train

Oh, the bliss of the Japanese trains: quiet, clean, fast and always on time. I’ve missed all that during my daily commutes to work and back home so much that it almost hurt. As soon as my butt hits the comfortable seat again, I know I will nod off for some much-needed rest after the long flight. Unless I don’t nibble on some bento food first…

What do you think of my plan? I think it’s quite good. In fact, I can hardly wait to start executing it. Few more days to go…
