The Pescheria – Fish Market in Catania

It’s loud, it’s smelly but it’s great fun – a visit to the Pescheria, the traditional fish market in Catania, Sicily. For me a stroll through a local market is always the best way to experience a destination through its sounds and flavours. And the Pescheria does not disappoint. Come here for some people-spotting and admire the amazing variety of fresh fish on offer. Besides, you will be able to observe some interesting local customs. Like the fact that the whole fish business seems to be a male affair – the vendors are almost exclusively men, and so are the customers. I guess women don’t want to haggle with loud fishermen so they let the men handle it…

And there’s more than just fish. The streets surrounding the Pescheria are full of stalls selling meat, dairy products, olives, fresh fruit and vegetables – you name it. I’ll be damned if you manage to get away without buying at least a sweet almond cookie.
